Sunsets or Storm Clouds
In the fall my wife and I spent some time near the St Lawrence Seaway. The date was set weeks in advance, hoping for some fall leaves and good photography weather. We planned to visit Cape Vincent, NY one evening, looking for the opportunity to photograph the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse with the sun setting behind it over Lake Ontario. At the end of the day, there was a storm moving in from across the lake. Would it hold off long enough for a good sunset? Almost, but not quite. We got a little color along the horizon, but the storm clouds dominated the sky.
Storms at sunset are a gift. Angry clouds back-lit by a sun low on the horizon gives the sky mood and texture that create some amazing images. This storm was coming in fast. The sun went down, and I got a few more shots of the lighthouse, then quickly packed up my camera and headed for the car. We got a mile up the road, and the rain came.
