I was at the station, had a roll of film in the camera that was almost gone, and heard a freight train approaching.
I likely only had one exposure left on the roll.
I had a little time to prepare the shot while it approached. I decided how close I wanted it to be for the right angle, prefocused on the spot, and waited for the engine to get in the frame.
Click.
I put my thumb on the winder and found there was still one more frame.
I turned as the train passed. I had to focus and frame this shot fast, a cause of anxiety with manual focus lenses.
But this frame was a bonus.
Quick decision, and click.
I stood and watched the train cars pass and slowly rewound the roll in the camera. I watched box cars with colorful graffiti go past without thinking I had to shoot them.
I loaded another roll as the last car rolled by.
The empty camera had given me a chance to just watch the rest of this train pass.
